Preparing to survive if the world turns to crap.
A while back I wrote how Entertainment = Survival. This is true. The SAS Survival handbook lists the WTL, or will to live, as one of the factors affecting your survival.
Look, if we were mindless automatons, none of this would matter. But we're not. We have this thing called a frontal cortex. It's the part of our brains that make us who we are. You can see the need for entertainment and 'purpose' in everything you do and yearn for every day. You can even see it in animals like dogs. While they don't have the ability for complex abstract thought like we do, they have well developed frontal cortex's that gives them individual personalities, complex emotions and the need for play and purpose, just like us.
So, a big part of the WTL is to make life about more than just survival. Hopefully you have a group of good people if it all goes downhill, because being among friends boosts your WTL. Having the occasional treat, like these freeze dried desserts will act as a 'comfort' for you and help the WTL, for example.
I don't consider myself a big music person. But the other night I spent over an hour on YouTube just browsing music videos. I realized that when I'm in my truck I'm constantly searching the radio for songs that I like. This means that music actually is a big part of my life. Considering the amount of money the music industry makes, I'd say it's a big part of everyone's life, and therefore a large component of your WTL.
So, my next move? Getting an MP3 player. Sure, I have one on my smart phone, but in all honesty my smart phone is a power hog, and power is something that won't be particularly plentiful if TEOTWAWKI ever happens. If you have a dedicated mp3 player like an ipod, so much the better. If not, you can get something like this Sansa MP3 player. I'm not sure how big the battery is, but considering how tiny this MP3 player is I'm betting my Opteka solar charger will have no issue charging this thing up over and over again.
So, I'm on a mission to add one more item to my go bag that weighs less than an ounce but might just be the ticket to give me more will to live, which is a very important (if not the most important) factor in survival. This means MP3 collecting.
As a bonus, below please see a video of the MP3's I'll be trying to find first. At first, I thought this group was another dumb boy band. Then I noticed there was a (hot) girl. Then I noticed they had talent. Then I noticed they were a capella . They are called Pentatonix, they are amazing, so enjoy.
