Psychological aspects are crucial to your self-defense training. You need to be able to understand these concepts and use them in synergy with the physical techniques.

Let’s say your opponent is coming at you with a knife, while demanding something of yours whether it be money, your watch, or even your wallet. You have to keep him talking, and make him forget about the knife. You also need to try to diffuse the situation.

The minute he comes near you, your arms should come up u[ in a calm manner. Once you’ve gotten him to talk more and make him forget about his knife, you can use the element of surprise to strike at him and trap the knife hand.

You should look at your surroundings while making him talk (to scan for a possible multiple attacker situation), or even move around in circles and make some distance between you both. If he strikes at you, and you are in no position to capture the knife, you can use low line kicks to strike back at him while parrying with the knife until you manage to trap it with one of your hands. You have to be aware of your opponent’s moves at all times, especially his body language since an attack like this goes down fast.

Once you manage to trap the knife that is in your attacker’s hand, you can defend yourself by using palm strikes or devastating elbows! While doing so, you must be aware of the knife and its movements. If your attacker manages to put the knife in his other hand, you have to be aware and ready to trap it once again.

If you have an improvised weapon in this type of situation, it’s excellent because you can use it to distract your attacker, and manage to escape. Remember, you should focus on surviving and getting out of the situation. Give it all you’ve got…Your life depends on it!
