We want to see how people react defensively to a knife attack. Along the way, we will be giving you some tips on how to enhance your survival against a knife attack. You will learn how to trap, strike, counter and escape.
James was one of our volunteers for this social experiment. He wanted to learn how to defend himself if an opponent came at him with a knife. His first instinct was very good, he was aiming to trap the knife.
If ever an attacker on the streets comes towards you with a hand behind his back, you should immediately assume he has a weapon on him ready to use against you. If this is the case, don’t give him the opportunity to pull out the knife. Go pre-emptive, and strike him.
If he does manage to get the knife out, you will be cut and slashed. At that point, it’s all about how fast you are and how smart you are while defending yourself against him and the knife.
If he comes at you with a knife in hand, the first thing you want to do when he approaches you is try to diffuse the situation. Your arms should go up immediately in a passive, neutral stance. Once he tries to attack you, your first intention should be to trap the knife that is in his hands.
Avoid putting distance between you and your attacker, because that will give him the opportunity to slash at you and cut you. If you have an improvised weapon, such as a belt, you could use it to attack him or distract him momentarily.
If you do find yourself at more than an arm’s length from him, and he’s coming at you with the knife, you could use low line kicks to keep him back and then try to enter and strike him upfront. You don’t want to give him distance though, because your aim should be to trap the knife that is in his hands.
Learn self-defense, fight back, and stay safe.
