See what sea survival training looks like for sailors getting ready for the Volvo Ocean Race 2017.
The advanced sea survival techniques were taught at the South Shields Marine Offshore Training Centre which boasts an excellent environmental swimming pool and fire fighting facilities. There are several components to the Sea Survival Training including: class room exercises, live trail with liferafts & lifejackets in the environmental pool along with fire-fighting and flare training.
The teams are all thrown about by waves, showered by ‘rain’ and enveloped in darkness as they practice man overboard scenarios and got to grips with all their safety kit including the new Ocean SOLAS Ultralite liferaft.
